It is 1986. An emotionally damaged New York reporter is sent to cover the hometown hooplah for a local hero. But rather than pursue his assignment, which leaves him cold, he follows a group of disaffected students, whose own hero - their beloved, unconventional teacher - has just killed himself under a cloud of scandal. Their passionate and, at times, ludicrous expressions of grief attract him. He moves into their alternate universe, a willing substitute teacher, but descends into a web of lies and misplaced sexual desire with this group of confused and combustible youths who attempt to cast him as their new hero and teacher.

Nel 1986. A New York un giornalista sentimentalmente stravolto viene mandato a scrivere la storia sulla città natale di un eroe locale. Ma piuttosto che portare a termine il compito al lui assegnato, segue un guppo di studenti anarchici, disperati del fatto che il loro amato e non ortodosso professore si è appena suicidato nelle circostanze di uno scandalo. Il giornalista è attratto dal loro passionale e a volte irragionevole lutto per il loro prof. Entra nel loro enigmatico universo alternativo, diventa "un buon supplente" , ma viene intrappolato in una rete di bugie e di perversione con questo gruppo di giovani confusi ed esplosivi che tentano di farlo diventare il loro nuovo eroe.
